Read the fine print

The Command Post - 2004 US Presidential Election - Bush Memo Update

Kelli Edwards from CBS: "CBS verified the authenticity of the documents by talking to individuals who had seen the documents at the time they were written. These individuals were close associates of [Bush commander] Colonel Jerry Killian and confirm that the documents reflect his opinions at the time the documents were written."

Note the fine print here. "CBS verified the authenticity of the documents by talking to individuals who had seen the documents at the time they were written"... technically speaking this may not be a lie given that Edwards does not make a statement about when they were written. Further, "These individuals were close associates of [Bush commander] Colonel Jerry Killian" which may also not be an out and out lie if the people asked to "verify" the document are the same associates of Killian and Bush who are involved with the Texans for Truth group. Lastly, "and confirm that the documents reflect his opinions at the time the documents were written"... note that the claim isn't that the documents are authentic but that the opinions of a person long dead are supposedly authentic.

I even assert that the timing of these documents is too close to the beginning of the Texans for Truth activity to be a coincidence. If I was going to put money down, I would say that the forgeries were created by the so-called Texans for "Truth" and that CBS bought 'em hook line and sinker without question.
