Levelset
My friend and fellow IBMer Tom Glover helped to level set me on the search for a good starter digital camera. While I would eventually like to use an SLR, it would probably be good for me to start with something more lightweight, such as the Canon Powershot G6 and to take a course that would allow me to play with different pieces of equipment (flashes, lenses, etc). Sounds like a good plan given that the G6 is hundreds of dollars less than the entry level SLR's.
