Zell done

I broke down and watched the convention again tonight. I had too. I mean, Zell Miller and Dick Cheney. It was a must see. To this conservative christian republican Zell was spot on all the way and I think his talk will resonate with conservative leaning moderates and independents in a way that no Republican speaker could have. Zell has nothing to lose or gain with what he did tonight and he obviously doesn't care about keeping up appearances. Whether you agree with him or not, he shot straight from his gut and in a world where speech writers rule the roost and everything is always so scripted and emotionless, you've got to respect him. Personal conviction should always be more important than toeing the party line. (To be fair, I felt the exact same way when that one Republican guy jumped over to the Democrats).

Zell's speech hit home in another way. For nearly my entire life I've lived within 14 miles of one of the largest naval bases in the country. The Lemoore Naval Air Station in central California. Many of my closest friends are Naval pilots and ship personnel who served in both Iraqi wars. Had Kerry had his way on most of those appropriations he voted against, those friends may not have had what they needed to do their jobs.

Regarding Cheney.... I love Cheney. Personally I think he's great. Sure, I also think he's got some explaining to do regarding certain business dealings, but overall I think he's a great vice president and I absolutely love his personality.

Tonight's speeches should go a long way towards energizing the Republican base and throw down a very important guantlet to Kerry: enough talk about Vietnam, let's talk about your record in the Senate. Let's talk about your voting record. Let's talk about What You've Done For Me Lately when it comes to National Security. Every interview with a Democrat I've ever seen in which Kerry's Senate record has come up has ended in a deflection and a referral back to Kerry's Vietnam record. Kerry didn't even talk about his record during his own convention! What is he afraid of? He wants to be President? Show us a record that he is willing to stand on.
