Cote broke the news and Elias has already commented on it. Lotus Ventura is IBMs step into Social Computing. It consists of blogging software based on Roller, an enterprise directory, a social bookmarking application, activities, communities, etc. Sprinkled throughout the entire suite is support for Atom and the Atom Publishing Protocol (something I’ve been working the better part of a year to help bring to fruition). As Cote quotes, “whatever we can do, you can do.“.

The really cool part is that Ventura is 100% derived from stuff IBM has been using internally for quite some time. Blogging, social bookmarking, activities, bluepages, communities… these aren’t brand new shelfware things we’re not sure anyone will use.; thousands of IBMers are using these tools every day. Cool, eh?

(btw, this is a huge part of the “changing the message” stuff I mentioned earlier. Lotus just gets REST and the whole concept behind “chmod 777 web“.)
